Here at the Eye Unit, we are committed to providing an excellent local service to the residents of Dorset in the prevention and treatment of disorders of the eye.
The Eye Unit at The Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was originally founded in 1887 and known as The Westbourne Eye hospital. In April 2000 the service was moved to a purpose built new site at The Royal Bournemouth Hospital.
In the past year almost 34,000 patients were seen in eye clinics and a further 10,500 benefited from urgent or emergency treatment. Surgeons in the Eye Unit perform around 3500 cataract operations every year, which comprises around 75% of the surgical workload. The unit is proud to achieve both local and national targets with many patients receiving their treatment well within the three month target.
We also operate on child and adult squints.
