Winter pressures and cancellations

4 January 2018

As has been widely reported, large numbers of NHS hospitals are currently facing significant challenges as a result of a combination of winter pressures.

Chief Operating Officer for RBCH, Richard Renaut, said: “As part of detailed annual winter plan we had already reduced our non-urgent elective procedures until 15 January to avoid the very busy winter period. We have reviewed the recent guidance from NHS England and are ensuring we are taking action where appropriate to balance all competing demands.

"We will continue to review this situation daily and aim to keep any necessary postponements to a minimum. Any patients affected by cancellations will be contacted directly to inform them of any changes to their scheduled procedures or appointments, otherwise they should attend as planned.

"We also have no current plans to put our patients in mixed sex wards. The situation remains at escalated levels, and we are grateful for our staff, partners, volunteers and carers for all they are doing.

Our Emergency Department remains incredibly busy and so we encourage residents to call NHS 111 and seek advice if you are unsure where to get treatment."
