Our Plans

Dorset's Sustainability and Transformation Plan (STP)

Towards the end of 2015, every health and care system were asked to come together to create their own ambitious local Sustainability and Transformation Plan (STP) to accelerate the implementation of the Five Year Forward View. These plans also aim to build and strengthen local relationships, enabling a shared understanding of where we are now, ambition for 2021 and the steps needed to get us there.

The STP for Dorset – entitled Our Dorset – has been co-developed with local partners and aims to drive a genuine and sustainable transformation in health and wellbeing outcomes for the residents of Dorset over the longer-term. As an overarching strategic plan the STP covers elements of the Health and Wellbeing Strategies, Integrated Community Services, and Clinical Services Review programme; which have been informed by the public, patients and wider stakeholders.

A draft of Our Dorset was submitted in line with national guidance on 30 June 2016, this was followed by a review meeting with NHS England on 15 July 2016. A further draft was submitted to NHS England on 21 October 2016 which has now been approved and can be viewed below:

  • Clinical Services Review (CSR)

    On Wednesday 20 September 2017, the governing body of NHS Dorset Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) agreed changes to local healthcare to help ensure high quality and sustainable services are available for future generations.

    As part of the CCG’s Clinical Services Review (CSR) the Royal Bournemouth Hospital will become the major emergency hospital and Poole Hospital will become the major planned hospital for east Dorset. For further information on the CSR, please click here

    Acute Vanguard – “One NHS in Dorset”

    To commence the process of reconfiguration and to ensure sustainability of services a Vanguard project was developed in early 2016 whereby a set of eight clinical services develop networks to ensure a collaborative approach to run these services as efficiently and effectively as possible across Dorset.

    The Vanguard has now integrated into the One Acute Network portfolio under the Dorset Integrated Care System. The One Acute Network comprises work on Dorset Clinical Networks and the changes to acute hospital services in east Dorset.

    Trust’s Strategy

    Alongside the above health system plans above the Trust has developed its own strategy and this was refreshed in 2015. This has a 5 year timeframe and integrates with both the county wide plans and the Trust’s own annual plans and objectives. The Trust strategy can be found at

    Trust's Annual Plan

    Each year the Trust develops an annual plan with both operational and financial components. This details the work we intend to undertake in the ensuing year and the challenges and risks to the plan. Components in the 2017/18 and 2018/19 plans include quality and quality improvement, demand and capacity modelling, the development of 7 day services and plans to address the significant workforce difficulties we face.

    Trust's Objectives

    To help to implement the annual plan and monitor our performance against it, the Trust produces a set of objectives for each year (below for 2018/19) and this year produced an illustrative video to demonstrate the practical work that is being undertaken to deliver these objectives and plans.

    • Listening to Patients - Ensuring meaningful engagement to improve patient experience

    Trust’s Annual Report

    The above documents are all plans and therefore have a forward look, detailing both the health system and our Trust’s intentions for the future. We also produce an Annual Report which reflects on the performance of the Trust in the immediate past financial year, both operationally and financially. This includes the formal statement of the Trust’s annual accounts.
