Children's competition to design a birthday card for the NHS launches

To celebrate the NHS turning 70, we are linking up with local schools and nurseries to encourage children to design a 70th birthday card for the NHS.

Children aged 11 and under are asked to draw an A4 sized picture which shows how the NHS has helped them or a friend or relative. For example, their grandparent playing football with them after a knee replacement or their sibling who was born in hospital.

Jenny House, one of our senior nurses who works at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital and has been a nurse for 50 years, will be helping to pick the winning entries.

Jenny, who is also 70 years old, said: “We really want local children to get involved in this competition which will help celebrate the institution that has changed millions of peoples’ lives for the better.

“This campaign is all about celebrating the last 70 years and seeing the impact the NHS has had on local children and their friends and relatives.

“There are some fantastic prizes for the winning entries, including tickets for Paultons Park, so we’re hoping for lots of children to get involved.”

Pictures can be scanned and emailed to or sent to ‘Schools Competition’, Communications Department, Royal Bournemouth Hospital, Castle Lane East, Bournemouth, BH7 7DW. Entries need to include the child’s name, age, school/nursery and their parent’s/guardian’s telephone number and email address on the back. It is also important to include a line or two about what the picture shows. Entries need to be received by 30 May 2018 and the winners will be announced in the summer.
