‘Nearly naked’ calendars raise £6,000 for local hospitals

‘Nearly naked’ calendars have raised £6,000 for the Royal Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Hospitals

A group of local women behind the ‘nearly naked’ calendar project have successfully raised £3,000 each for Bournemouth Hospital Charity and Poole Hospital Charity.

Sue Andress, Karen Douglan and Jo Kennedy, along with their families and friends, came together to create the calendars with a view to raise funds for local breast cancer units. Even Sue and Jo’s husbands, Mike Andress and Chris Kennedy, took part and posed for the month of December after their wives felt this would encourage men to get themselves checked out for breast cancer too.

After seeing celebrities on T.V. raising money for cancer projects, Jo and Sue were inspired to embark on a Calendar Girls-style journey to raise funds for the departments that had supported Sue through her own breast cancer treatments.

The group funded the project themselves, raising money from two psychic evenings at the Talbot Rise Club and multiple raffles. The project was met with plenty of support, with their photographer, Deborah Hurst, volunteering her services to shoot the calendar and Snaps Photo Services covering some of the production tasks and costs.

Sue then contacted Fire Radio and was interviewed about the story behind the creation of the calendars. Fire Radio, inspired by Sue’s story, got involved by producing their own calendars with companies and people from the community, with all the proceeds going to both hospital charities.

Sue had this to say about her journey with the calendars,

“It was a real accomplishment to raise much needed money and awareness. I for one count myself so lucky to still be here and wake up every morning after a high grade breast cancer diagnosis. I wanted to give something back for all the treatment and support I had. Without Jo and the amazing group of ladies and men that came together, this would not have been possible. It was a total team effort along the way which was so appreciated.”

Lindsey Sturman, Fundraising Manager for Bournemouth Hospital Charity, said

“This is an amazing amount of money to receive for both breast care departments by such an incredible group of people. These women are so brave to go ‘nearly naked’ and are an inspiration. The calendar and the other fundraising which took place has not only raised money, but also raised awareness for breast cancer. This is a great achievement and both the charity and the breast care unit are very thankful for their support.”
