Boost for Eye Unit following generous donations

17 July 2019

Donations which amounted to over £28,000 have boosted care at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital (RBH) Eye Unit.

Staff at the Bournemouth Eye Unit are very grateful to have received £28,428.98 in donations from local charity Friends of the Bournemouth Eye Unit to pay for new items and training at RBH.

The Friends of the Bournemouth Eye Unit raise funds to support the unit by purchasing equipment, funding improvements to the unit and boosts to the Eye Unit teams.

The monies were raised from investments, fundraising and donations, including substantial amounts from Barton-on-Sea Golf Club and Burley Art Club, both of whom chose the Friends of the Eye Unit as their ‘Charity of the year’.

This support has enabled the purchase of portable slit lamps, artisan lens forceps, micro forceps, implant forceps and a specular microscope to help our expanding corneal service and to further improve the patient experience.

Mr Rashid, Consultant Specialist in Cornea, Cataract and Refractive Surgery, said: “We are very appreciative for the support and assistance provided by the Friends of the Eye unit this equipment has allowed patients to receive the latest treatments closer to home.”

Donations from the charity were given to the Royal National Institute for the Blind to enable the services of an Eye Clinic Liaison Officer (ECLO) in the hospital outpatients department to continue. The officer supports and advises patients who are facing a sight loss diagnosis.

The funding also allowed for the purchase of air puff tonometers which enable the Eye Unit to run ‘virtual clinics’, resulting in a reduction of patient waiting times.

The charity funding also provided a generous grant to organise sub-specialist training courses in Nairobi for eye surgeons from South Sudan. Around 60 surgeons benefited from excellent teaching provided by Consultant colleague Narman Puvanachandra and our own Senior Orthoptist Henrietta Holmes-Smith.
