Hospital consultant is a World Cup champion

23 July 2019

A doctor at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital (RBH) returns to the Trust a championship winner, having triumphed at this year's World Medical Football Cup.

Consultant anaesthetist, Tom Hutley, who plays for the Great British Medical Football Team, celebrated the victory in Cancun, Mexico, following a 2-1 win over the Czech Republic. It is the third time Team GB has lifted the Morell Cup in the competition's 24-year history, defending their 2018 champion title after also achieving success in 2009. Tom has been playing with the squad for the past four years and has represented the Medics Team at three tournaments; Austria 2017, Prague 2018, and Mexico this year.

Speaking after the victory, Tom, who plays midfield, said: “Winning the world championship with my teammates is an amazing feeling. It was made extra special this time having secured a win for the second year running. Our team is diverse from all over the UK and the players bridge a number of specialties. Playing with the GB medics has rekindled my love of football, and the other benefit of competing in the World Cup is getting to meet players and fellow doctors from all over the world, across some 24 countries.

“We had to come back from behind in every game of this competition but our teamwork, resilience and trust in each other meant we had the ability to go on to win. This made it even more satisfying and really brought us together as a squad.”

Founded in 2005, the Great British Medical Team is formed of staff from hospital trusts across the country who compete in the annual championship, considered the peak of international amateur football for doctors. The UK team will next year head to Argentina to defend their title at the 2020 tournament.
