Eye Emergencies

Acute Referral Unit

An appointment system is in place for all emergency eye conditions.

Before visiting the unit please telephone us on:
01202 704181 (8am-6pm on weekdays; 8.30am-6pm on Saturdays and bank holidays); and 8.30am-2pm on Sundays.

An experienced Ophthalmic Nurse will assess the problem and give expert advice. Depending on the nature of the problem, you may be given an appointment or asked to attend the Eye Hospital immediately.

We have found that by asking patients to phone ahead we have reduced the waiting times for patients significantly.

Patients with emergency conditions after 6pm should go to the main Emergency Department at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital where they will be assessed. On-call ophthalmic support is provided 24 hours a day.

Non–urgent treatment

If you have a non–urgent eye problem you should visit your GP or optician who will be able to refer you to the Eye Unit if needed. It is normally not necessary to visit both your GP and optician.
