Services we provide

If your injury or illness is of a minor nature, then you will be treated on the Minors side of the department by either a doctor or Emergency Nurse Practitioner(ENP).

Primary Care Stream(PCS)

During peak times, this department may have either an Urgent Care Nurse Practitioner or GP working in the department seeing patients. They may provide treatment or might pass you onto a specialist ED Nurse or Dr.Alternatively, after assessment, they may refer you back to your own GP.

If you are particularly unwell then you may be allocated a bed on Majors whilst your examination, tests and treatment are carried out. From here you may be admitted into to the hospital for further care, or, if you are well enough, discharged.

Observation Ward

Attached to our Majors side of the department is the Observation Ward which is used by those who require further assessment, further investigations, a short period of observation or a short period of recovery. Typically, a stay in the Observation Ward will last between a few hours and 24 hours. Patients requiring a longer period of care will be admitted to the main hospital.

Resuscitation Room (‘Resus’)

Patients requiring very urgent treatment are taken to Resus where they will be immediately seen by a doctor, and can be closely observed by a nurse.

Emergency Department Review Clinic

We hold an ED Review Clinic four mornings a week which are run by our Consultants for the purpose of following up some minor injuries. Appointments are arranged during an attendance to the Emergency Department. If you have an appointment that you would like to change, or if you would like to cancel your appointment, please call the ED Reception on 01202 704169.

The Review Clinic is for patient who require a follow-up appointment where the hospital will check the progress of their injury.

Paediatric facilities

Whilst we see many children every year for minor injuries, our neighbouring ED based at Poole Hospital has a specialist paediatric unit. Any child requiring admission will therefore be transferred to Poole Hospital. If a child is severely unwell you should call 999.
